Dialogues – musical meetings in historic artist studios
A series of micro-concerts in spaces where the most important Warsaw artists created: painters, sculptors, fashion designers, photographers. The aim of the event is to bring visual art and music closer together and to show how they can dialogue with each other and mutually influence one another. “Dialogues…” are intimate meetings whose protagonists are not only the performing artists, but also the owners and guardians of the studios, listeners and – finally – the spaces themselves in which we appear.
In the first edition in 2022, we met in the studios of Karol Tchorek, Grażyna Hase, the Jarnuszkiewicz Family, Wanda Czełkowska and the Dłużniewski Family.
Each meeting consisted of a concert and a curatorial tour of the studio – the hosts were the current guardians of the studios or artists working in them. The concerts featured renowned musicians who each time performed a specially prepared program corresponding to the work of the selected artist and to the place and spirit of the studio. Additionally, at each concert, an improvised piece was presented, taking place “here and now”, inspired by the work of the artist to whom the studio belongs/belonged and by the place itself.
Renowned musicians performed during the concerts:
Mikołaj Trzaska,
Tansman Trio,
Hashtag Ensemble,
Maciej Zimka and Wiesław Ochwat as well as
Maria Sławek and Marcin Zdunik.
The idea of dialogue was thus fulfilled in several different ways: through a metaphorical conversation between creators from different fields realized in the choice of repertoire; through the creation of new works closely connected to the studios and their creators, and through curatorial tours bringing closer the activities of the artists, the specificity of their work and the history of the studios. Interdisciplinary meetings made it possible to create a unique musical picture of the studios, and the invited musician-artists added another interpretive layer to the works within them. The studios became a new platform for dialogue between different areas of art, and also encouraged the invited musicians and listeners to deepen their knowledge of contemporary visual art.
“Dialogues…” were nominated for the City of Warsaw competition for the best Warsaw non-governmental initiative S3KTOR.
The project’s initiator and curator is violinist Maria Sławek.
The second edition of the event began in September and will end in mid-December 2023. This time we will meet seven times, and among the artists who accepted our invitation are: Dominik Strycharski, Messages Quartet, Ewa Leszczyńska, Jakub Jakowicz, Maciej Kułakowski, Mikołaj Trzaska’s trio, Mateusz Kowalski, Anna and Krzysztof Firlus, Joanna Freszel and Łukasz Chrzęszczyk.
