Social responsibility of music – utopia or reality?
Can classical and contemporary music be socially responsible? It seems that two major crises – the pandemic and the war – have demonstrated the fundamental significance of music for the life and identity of societies. Yet, despite the violent changes around us, does classical music remain an escapist museum of ancient sounds?
Does contemporary music enter the lives of wider communities, or does it stubbornly choose its place in the niche of hermetic experiments?

Poisoned source of innovation. What did culture gain from the pandemic?
The fact that cultural figures – creators and audiences – suffered during the pandemic is obvious. Deep changes have touched and will touch many areas of art. We observe disappearing festivals, we ask ourselves about the future of opera and the great symphony orchestra, as expensive and “unprofitable” ways of practicing and experiencing art. In the face of economic, financial, and military crises, culture will surely undergo further transformations.
I invite you to reflect on whether there are “endangered species” in the world of culture that stand on the brink of extinction, and which we would like to save. And also – perhaps most importantly – in which areas have we gained? What new, valuable tools, ways of practicing art, or cultural products have appeared or entered wider circulation? What is worth noticing and developing? Is it only the use of internet tools, or have innovations spread more widely? Let us consider where it is worth investing the potential of creative people, what to suggest to the institutions we work with, and what to inspire young people toward.
