DURING THE CONCERT WE WILL HEAR TWO MUSICAL PROGRAMS: “TIMELESSNESS” PERFORMED BY HASHTAG ENSEMBLE AND “TANSMAN QUARTETS” PERFORMED BY ATOM STRING QUARTET
In the project “Timelessness” we encounter three giants of contemporary music: Kaija Saariaho, George Crumb and Morton Feldman in their struggle with Time as a mystical and musical category.
Kaija Saariaho’s composition “Cendres” (Ashes) is an intriguing meditation on transience, in which instruments meet for a brief moment, performing coordinated musical gestures together, only to then dissolve in ephemeral transformations of rhythm and meter, as if moving away from the listener, to finally sink into symbolic silence.
George Crumb in “Vox Balaenae” (Voice of the Whale) derives both the depth of sounds and the impression of “timelessness” from the inspiration of whale song. Thanks to the composer’s extraordinary sensitivity in instrumentation, we can immerse ourselves in an ocean of music that is extraordinarily refined in its color, and at the same time extraordinarily spatial, hypnotic and deeply spiritual.
Morton Feldman’s composition – “Why Patterns?” is in turn a unique philosophical discourse on the essence of understanding time in music and in life. The inspiration for the creation of the work came from observations of the creation of Middle Eastern carpets, which lack a clear weaving pattern. By composing “without a pattern” successive sequences of sounds, Feldman paints in a fascinating way extraordinary stories touching on ultimate matters.
To the tender, full of subjective emotions soaring over what is immersed in time and what is beyond time, preparing for the Music of Peace – Music of Faith Festival the project “Timelessness”, invites the Hashtag Ensemble formation. It is an exceptional musical cooperative specializing in performances of world and Polish contemporary music, improvisatory initiatives and artistic education. The cooperative, created by over twenty distinguished young Polish musicians, was founded in 2013 by the excellent flutist Ania Karpowicz. Unusual, based on the principles of full democracy and conscious artistic choice, the programmatic and personal flexibility of the formation allows for the creation of intriguing and extraordinary works, which often appear at respected domestic and foreign festivals.
